Spithead Fleet Review, June 1953. The liner is the P & O Strathnaver, which along with Orcades and Pretoria Castle, carried Government guests in the procession astern of HMS Surprise and other HM Ships. The two I of W ferries are Brading and Southsea, which also took part in the review, with VIPs embarked.

Re: RN Battleships: HMS Vanguard
Thanks for return comments Jim & Dave, none of us are getting any younger and the grey cells diminish, possibly the rum and beer (CSB) hasn't helped over the years, so we all get a bit confused at times. Thank you both for the great contribution you have both made to this site, I'm afraid I don't always get time to respond. Must try harder!!!
Regards, Ken Harrow (Dabtoe46).

Re: RN Battleships: HMS Vanguard
Ivor, missed your question re. holes in the bottom of the 15" guns. The short answer, I don't know, any of our readers ex gunnery branch may have the answer. From an engineering point of view could they be for some attachment to do with practice shoots or the hole to fit a spigot on a spanner for removal of barrel part?
