Tambor Class Submarine USS Trout pictured as she docks alongside Omaha Class Light Cruiser USS Detroit at Pearl Harbor in early March 1942, to unload a cargo of gold and silver she had evacuated from the Philippines. She delivered ammunition to the besieged American forces on Corregidor.....The bullion had been loaded aboard as 'ballast' at Corregidor on February 4th 1942..Trout is credited with sinking 12 enemy ships for 37,144 tons according to JANAC records. During her first ten war patrols she made 32 torpedo attacks, firing 85 torpedoes, including 34 hits, 5 confirmed premature detonations, 5 confirmed duds, and 25 suspected duds. She was also involved in six battle surface actions and was attacked with depth charges on eight occasions.
She was reported overdue on 17 April 1944 and presumed lost with all hands on her eleventh war patrol. Of the twelve Tambor Class Submarines, only five survived the war.

Tambor Class Submarine USS Tautog pictured in Dry Dock No 4. at Mare Island Navy Yard on March 13th 1942...She was one of the most successful Submarines of World War II. Tautog was credited with sinking 26 Japanese ships, for a total of 72,606 tons, scoring second by number of ships and eleventh by tonnage earning her the nickname 'The Terrible T.' Of the twelve Tambor Class Submarines, she was one of only five to survive the war.
