Portuguese Navy submarine NRP Arpão leaves Lisbon for NATO operation in the Mediterranean
The NRP Arpão (S161), a Tridente-class submarine of the Portuguese Navy, commanded by (OF-3) Lieutenant Captain Paulo Ricardo Oliveira Macedo da Silva with a crew of 37 soldiers, set sail on October 7, 2024 from the Lisbon Naval Base, assigned to NATO's Operation "Sea Guardian". In the foreground of the photo, the blue and red markings stand out.red on the bow horn - corresponding to the signal of the passage from the Northern Hemisphere to the Southern Hemisphere (red) and the crossing of the Arctic Circle (blue). In the background, crossing the Tagus River estuary, we have two catamaran passenger transport vessels of Transtejo & Soflusa (TTSL).
Operation "Sea Guardian", launched by NATO in November 2016, aims to ensure security and capacity building in the Mediterranean, especially aimed at combating terrorism and ensuring maritime security and freedom of movement - as well as protecting critical infrastructure. In November 2023, the action of the Portuguese Navy's NRP "Arpão" submarine was referenced in the context of this same operation, ref. https://espada-e-escudo.blogspot.com/20 ... to-do.html .
The NRP Arpão, also embarking two officers from the Romanian Navy ("Forțele Navale Române"), and under the NATO Submarine Command (COMSUBNATO), will be assigned to Operation "Sea Guardian" for the next 60 days, returning to Lisbon on 16 December 2024. It is expected to be present in the ports of Souda (Greece), Taranto (Italy), Maó and Cartagena (Spain). It will also participate in the European Union's (EUNAVFOR) Operation "Irini", which has focused, since 2020, on arms trafficking to Libya in the context of its Second Civil War, as well as in NATO's Operation "Noble Shield", to reinforce presence and deterrence in the Mediterranean Theatre of Operations.
Built by Howaldtswerke-Deutsche Werft GmbH (HDW), in Kiel, Germany, under type U-209PN, the NRP Arpão entered service with the Portuguese Navy on 22 December 2010. It displaces 2,020 tons submerged, is 67.7 metres long and has a beam of 6.35 metres, and is capable of a submerged speed of 20 knots (37 km/h), with an operational range of 12,000 nautical miles (22,000 km).
With a base crew of 33 members (7 officers, 10 sergeants and 16 enlisted men), it is armed with 8 533mm torpedo tubes (4 of them capable of launching UGM-84L "Harpoon" missiles). It carries up to 12 WASS Blackshark torpedoes. It can also carry 10 additional military personnel from special operations units, namely DAE ("Special Actions Detachment") operatives of the Portuguese Navy.

New support ship to feature drone runway, helicopter hangar, and 60-metre boarding boats
Drones are revolutionising naval warfare and the new Multi-Purpose Support Ship 9000 is designed to play a key role.
This 130-metre-long vessel, primarily a drone carrier, will support submarine rescue, diving operations, and helicopter missions.
Equipped with a helicopter hangar, flight deck, and drone runway, it will house both fixed-wing and VTOL (vertical takeoff and landing) drones, with 60-metre boarding boats on either side.
Currently under construction in Romania for the Portuguese Navy, the ship is expected to enter service in 2026.
