SCU RN Unit Tangmere & later SCU Leydene
Some clippings of events relating to former members of the RN Special Communications Unit (SCU) located within the RAF Tangmere establishment.
1st; an article in 'THE COMMUNICATOR' magazine VOL. 14 NO.2 SUMMER 1960
Only a few years before my time; and contains some names of members of the Unit with whom I would become aquainted.

2nd; an article possibly submitted to the Navy News.
Includes names of some former colleagues (with whom I am still in touch) and/or members of the branch about whom I had been made aware.
-----------------------------
3rd; an article carried in the Chichester Chronicle 13th Dec 2018

Well at last the veneer is peeled back Harry .
Most of the old hands knew of your clandestine activities in general , but having said that not your definitive role , merely referring to you as a " Secret Squirrel " , but having read snippets over the years had a sneaking suspicion that all was not quite what it had been portrayed as .....i.e. your references to submarine activity , and comms in general ......discreetly answered
I have always had the greatest respect for your " observations " on both run of the mill questions fielded , and the "Electrickery" references you have side stepped .
In my book you fell into the brief of " known whilst non specific " which was generally a healthy attitude to adopt .
I have had the privilege to have meet those in the know and those who wished to be labeled as in the know , all of which have been held in the highest esteem , and I chuckled to myself when reading about " Chicksands " having been at the rough end of their Security Forces on one occasion whilst visiting there Professionally whilst travelling up "Spitfire Drive" in the mid seventies
Delighted to see you have "come out" at last and respect you for it...... as always mate .

Re. Your:- but having said that not your definitive role - as far as I am concerned that will remain so
For info; the 1st and 2nd articles in the thread opening post had previously been posted in the Comms thread, in the old forum ... so nothing really new there.

Quite rightly so Harry , leave it veiled as it would serve no purpose eh .
Yet another reference to the "old Forum" posts..... again .......wish I knew when I was not at home reading all these references to which you refer ......but then I'm not as bright as you eh Harry I thought you wore Comms not practiced them
Forgive me for not responding to your kind PM Harry , as I thought my post would avoid duplication....hope you don't mind

Re: SCU RN Unit Tangmere & later SCU Leydene
Well Harry a very interesting collection of articles .
As you obviously are aware my involvement with the above was whilst maned in late 1970's by our friends from over the pond , and along with the countries leading authority on ancient monuments and my more humble specialised subject of timber framed properties we met to carry out a survey of the building , which was both educational and a tad alarming , as we had been given directions to the area of the old priory to survey , when we were stopped in our car , spread eagled and searched by the combat armed US MP's .
It transpired that the directions given to my colleague had not been adhered to and he drove down what appeared to us to be an innocuous drive turned out to be a sensitive area , and we were escorted to the correct building.
They were very apologetic to us once confirmation of our identity had been confirmed , but my companion suffered from an unfortunate stutter which once under stress evolved into an unintelligible babble , which was extremely embarrassing to him and only responded to intelligent conversation when not corrected or questioned under pressure by others .
The survey carried out by us was very well received by the recipients and we did in fact find some hitherto unknown priest holes in the building fabric .
The rumour at the time was that the installation was a listening centre used to collect world wide information from sources both above and below the horizons aided by the enormous circle of masts strung in a circle that must have covered an are of square miles , non of which could be confirmed at the time .
I am not sure if it is still operational as I haven't been over that way for years and I was told that most of its facilities were now closed , but there were huge blocks of accommodation blocks running parallel to the roads which were rumoured to having been released for housing needs ?
