Dear All,
This chap had the name ? Begg; he was believed killed in action during the war in an incident involving a submarine, whether by a submarine or in one. Can we identify his Service, RN/MN, and specialisation. I am trying to get his full name and maybe some numbers.
Thanks
tim

Re: Can we help identify this seaman?
The middle photo shows him dressed as a Petty Officer, the other two show him dressed as a Chief Petty Officer. I checked the Commonwealth War Graves Commission site for casualties with the surname Begg and it only came up with two people, none of them were of these ranks:
Begg CWGC
Jim
ps I also did a search without a surname for the rank of Chief Petty Officer, but none of the 500 names listed resembled the name Begg - Is the name written on the back of the photos?

I checked the Barrow Submariners Association site and found no matches either.
Jim
ps In the absence of a branch badge on his lapels as a Chief Petty Officer, it is possible that he was an Artificer.

Re: Can we help identify this seaman?
thanks Jim; I gather that the later picture where he has the white cover to his cap was taken in a studio in Sydney Aus. This would suggest he survived WW2 and that this might be a picture on promotion to send home? The photo studio was called "Jerome"..
I believe that all service records from 1928 are still retained by the MoD, anyone got any ideas how we can progress from here?

Jerome's had photo studios around the country and I am sure we have a family photo of someone taken by Jerome's in Sunderland.
The National Archive records up to 1928 have these Begg surnames
Off out now but will continue searching later

thanks Jim
I reckon he was born between 1918/1923 just by his looks and early date of the first picture which makes him a young PO by 1941-ish.

Thats what I was thinking Tim. Unfortunately, records after 1928 are not online, but someone with a subscription to Ancestry.com, or one of the other genealogy sites may be able to check their records. If he received an award for his role with the submarine, he may have appeared in the London Gazette, which is available online, but not very friendly for searches as the pages are all in PDF format.
