BRANCH BADGES

"In case you're a little out of touch with the modern Navy, the Communicators branch badge has evolved into the attached. All that is left of the heritage is that one lightning bolt in the background.

The Buntings flags are now a cuff badge for those killicks who are specialists in that part of ship, (like a navs yeo in past times) after they got rid of the buntings and merged them with seaman specs. They had no Yeomen as time went by and that came and bit them on the arse."

I stand corrected Harry, was mislead, should have checked, for my penance I have:
"I put the new badge together, the job has evolved so much now that there is very little in connection with the Sparker job of old (I was one). The globe represents the IT networking skills the guys are required to have. The balls looping are meant to represent Satellites and the flashes as a homage to our past. The torpedo and missile were forced upon us to represent that CIS is part of the WE branch and Engineers in their own right. This and other mock ups were sent to a dozen deployed ships for comment and this one came back as the one the guys favoured. In the time i had it was the best we could come up with (I had two weeks and wanted the guys and gals to have an input which hampered design time). Happy to answer any sensible questions about the evolution from RO(G) to CIS. The amount and size of data packages the guys are responsible for moving around these days is mind boggling. I'm glad I don't have to 'tap it out.' "

What about the Buntings?
I'm still trying to find out what badge Seaman Specialist wear if they carry out Buntings' duties.
Some say crossed flags cuff badge other say shackle and on flag cuff badge.

Communicating Engineers – what’s in a badge?
27 March 2015

The Royal Navy’s world of Communications and Information Systems is on the move – from the Warfare Branch to Weapon Engineering.

Sailors from HMS Diamond, Trenchant and Somerset became the first to receive the new badges marking the merger of CIS with WE and CISSM (Submarines) with WESM (Submarines).

The change is one of several in weapon engineering introduced as part of the Faraday programme which aims to make the engineering branch better.

The close ties between the WE and CIS branches – with engineers and the warfare world working ‘hand in glove’ for a number of years – plus the increasing skills of the CIS branch in network operation, administration and maintenance, meant boundaries between the two branches have become blurred.

And so, as of April 1, the formal transfer of all warfare CIS and CISSM personnel into the Weapon Engineering Branch will begin.
