ivorthediver wrote: Thu May 02, 2019 5:39 pm Thanks for sharing David but its a tad confusing to the layman in that the badge clearly depicts a missile and torpedo a globe and the lightning bolt , but no reference to the SEA :?:

It is after all a Naval badge is it not , or am I missing something here please
Ah Ivor but our species dwelt on, below and over the sea plus on the seashore and amongst other places such as tunnels, castles and towers which controlled flying machines. Our Gods dwelt mainly in wardrooms but also in posh abodes ashore suitable for their rank.
Hence where many came from was known as Mercury - http://www.commsmuseum.co.uk/index.htm

Well Ivor your last two posts have left me more than a tad confused.

What is it that you feel is missing from the Comms branch badges then and now.

If you can give us a clue perhaps the matter can be clarified or indeed solved/resolved for you.

Well it seems to me that some link to the Navy would be pertinent i.e. an anchor or a wave , as at present it could be any of the forces .......only my point of view of course .

That's an easy one to answer Ivor. The branch badge without any ref to the Navy; is being worn on the uniform (working or dress) of a .... sailor!!

BLAZER BADGE

After my time but apparently these badges were around in the 1960s.
Seems to be a difference of opinion whether they were Comms. Branch or Signal School-Mercury ones?
Flags are "Equal Speed Charlie London" decodes as "Turn and face the enemy" ordered hoisted in HMS lron Duke at the battle of Jutland.
"Pre 1944 (or thereabouts) those flags had the meaning ‘Equal Speed’ ‘Charlie’ and ‘London’ :-: so that British ships could operate with the American Fleet, in the Pacific, we had to do a change, to their system. So same flags but different meanings assigned “Turn” “Zulu” “Victor”."
The Latin translates (l think) "From standards, Wisdom." ?

I have since been assured by 'elder' members of the Branch that the badge is a Branch one and not just Mercury. It is still being worn all around the world with pride.
