There are many requirements for flashing up a boiler from cold. The main two are , remove the funnel cover & don't forget to put a box of matches in your pocket.

Correction to my previous, should read "funnel cover". We found the Daily Mirror easier to light than cotton waste!

I was watching an old Dvd showing destroyers in a rough sea. I was reminded of my time in Wrangler (pre conversion) when I noticed they had safety lines rigged on the iron deck. Being stationed at Rosyth with frequent encounters with some roughers we used to rig safety lines. It was still hazardous carrying a tray of cooked food aft while trying to hang on to a safety line at the same time. Sorry about the "swinging lamps".

What a memory that is .............. take your life in your hand going aft or for'ard . Twas same on all the emergency destroyers , in my case to get to the emergency radio gear in the Aft ossifers Cabin Flat . Ugh :o

Yep guys what memories indeed ... lines rigged on Battle Class all same-same ... Comms mess was below the sickbay flat under the aft STAAG/twin Bofors gun deck.

When it got too hairy and upper deck placed out of bounds .. it was transit fwd/aft - aft/fwd to galley for/with trays of scran and fannys of soup/pot mess then make your way across the catwalks connecting the various gundecks over the fwd and aft torpedo tubes and down a vertical ladder from the aft gundeck to the sickbay flat before down ladder to the mess.

The 2nd W/T office was in the fwd port corner of the Comms mess but my office (3rd W/T Office) was on stbd side of flag deck so had to make the transit for every watch stood.

Safety lines weren't just rigged on small ships. When I was on the Ark Royal (R09) safety lines were often rigged across the PV Spaces on 4 deck.
Then again, life on a Type 14 was more exciting in rough weather ;-)
