Snap! Same birth year O.S. Mine is actually Swithun's day. Think it was more the carbon sheets rather than paper the the Chief Poker did'nt approve of, always given the impression that we were speeding up the need for a boiler clean.

Pelican, I hope you have a short surname, otherwise you would have used a lot of red cotton. I sometimes think of those far distant days, funny things come to mind eg how we fold up our suits into a neat little bundle, blancoing white caps, sleeping in hammocks, lashing up & stowing. Crowded smelly messdecks, canteen messing. Could go on for ages!

Sure did O.S. - surname only 3 letters plus coming from a training ship, T.S. Exmouth, it was a doddle so on completion helped others with long names. Attached is a photo of 4 Maltese Boys doing just that in 1952, two of them are still active on our Facebook Group [3.8k members] which is at - https://www.facebook.com/groups/hmsganges - it is a 'Closed Group' so you would need to join.
The Ganges Association is at - https://www.hmsgangesassoc.org/members/home - See - https://www.hmsgangesassoc.org/cmspage/ ... ssociation - if you wish to join.

I was rejected for entry at age 15 due not meeting height requirement but made it at 15 and a 1/2 helped by a personal letter of recommenation from my Capt. Supt. to the Capt. of Ganges.
They served together in WW II.
