The Colossus class Karel Doorman suffered a boiler room fire on 26 April 1968 and she was removed from service. The boilers from the incompleted HMS Leviathan, which lay up the trot at Portsmouth since shortly after launching, were removed and fitted into Karel Doorman, which was sold to Argentina as the Veinticinco de Mayo.

Having taken a closer look at this image posted by Brian, one is left wondering if the vessel being replenished by KD is in fact streaming a stern hose for an over-the-bow replenishment of the destroyer D814. There is however; no sign of a/the pick-up float; no sign of a hose splash or wake; and one can not see any other indication of the hose having been picked up and connectivity having been achieved.

I note that all three vessels appear to have a 2 x black balls hoisted; KD and D814 on a port yard and the other vessel on a stbd yardarm(?)

It certainly seems that whatever is being streamed over the stern of the stbd vessel is too hefty to be a log line.

Any ideas?

Colossus Class Light Fleet Carrier HNLMS Karel Doorman (Ex HMS Venerable) pictured post her major 1955-58 refit being moved from Wilton Fijenoord Shipyard Facility at Rotterdam,May 28th 1958.Many new developments in Naval Aviation were added. The typically British styled island was replaced by a Dutch designed superstructure, with similarities to the Cruisers of the De Ruyter Class. Most notably the enormous LW-01 long range radar antenna on top of an even more enormous lattice mast and a tall funnel, which carried the large LW-02 radar antenna. Typically of larger Netherlands warships was the VI nodding height finder radar, of which two were placed on either end of the superstructure. The close range anti aircraft guns were replaced by 10 Bofors 40mm, 40L70. The following 2 years she operated up to 14 Avengers, 10 Sea Hawks and 2 S-55 helicopters and acted as flagship.
