Probably issued to boy entries at Ganges and St Vincent for their 12 months Part 1 training. My Part 1 training was six weeks at Raleigh, where they were only issued to Seaman ratings. It was only another item of kit to look after ;-)

No Jim they were earnt at Ganges, you had to learn all the calls properly and then were presented with a Silver Call engraved with your name, highly prized. The drawback was when joining a ship once it was known you were forever near the gangway on special occasions until picking up your hook or even later. We still manage to usually produce a Call Boy for the funerals of Members of our Association when one of us CTB.
Under current Rules and Regs. we are rarely allowed in the Church or Crem. so we line the road outside a 2M intervals and do the the usual. Jack always finds a way.

Right Lads time to put your thinking Caps on :

Whilst clearing out Chalkies house recently I cam across these , and after checking that they had all been fired put them in a box to look at later .

Karen said that when she was younger he kept all these gleaming like gold on the mantel , and whilst I can identify some others are new to me and wondered if you could name the less obvious ones :-

Not sure Ivor, you need the advice of a gunnery rating.

Do we know off any Jim :?: or should I move the post to " weapons "

The large ones appear to be made of both Brass AND others are Bronze ......

Never seen Star shells but could they be part of that make up

I've asked the question among the Ganges Boys' gunners.

"Metal stuff that go in/on small, medium and large bang sticks!

"OK. Proper answer.
Firstly, make sure the items are SAFE. Check the base of each cartridge case for a striker mark.
Arm yourself with a magnifying glass, because all the info required will be stamped on the items.
Front row. Ctge cases 20mm to 40mm.
Middle row Small Arms Ammunition. Looks like .45"/9mm, 5.56mm, 303", and possibly 2 Martini Henry Rounds.
Rear row. Four shell fuzes, possibly 4". 20mm to 30mm Drill rounds.
Plenty of info on the web, so let your fingers do the walking.
Tony L '56"

[Boys will be Boys, especially Ganges' ones. Add 15 to 56 and you will get his age. ;) ]
