Originally planned as a Class of eight boats, only five were built and were numbered sequentially Holland 1 to 5.
The Electric Boat Company negotiated their construction and they were built under license by Vickers at Barrow in Furness in 1901 and 1902.
They continued in service until just before the First World War, when they were sold for scrapping.
Holland 1 foundered and was lost while being towed. She was rediscovered in 1981 and refloated and restored at the Royal Navy Submarine Museum at Gosport in Hampshire.
