Clemson Class Destroyer USS Branch pictured fitting out at Alpha Wharf, Norfolk Navy Yard on June 1st 1920...She entered service in 1920, after a short active life, Branch was placed in reserve in 1922. The ship was activated again for World War II before being transferred to the Royal Navy under the Destroyers for Bases Agreement in 1940. Renamed HMS Beverley, the Destroyer served in the Battle of the Atlantic as a convoy escort, Beverley was assigned to Escort Group B-4 of the Mid-Ocean Escort Force for convoys ON 140, ON 161, ON 169, HX 229 and ON 176. On April 9th 1943 while escorting Convoy ON 176, she collided with the steamship Cairnvolona in bad weather and had her anti-submarine and degaussing gear put out of action. Two days later she was torpedoed by Submarine U-188 commanded by Kapitänleutnant Siegfried Lüdden and sank with the loss of 139 members of her crew, including her commanding officer.

Clemson Class Destroyer USS Sturtevant pictured under construction at New York Shipbuilding Corporation Shipyards on December 1st 1918...On April 26th 1942, she departed Key West in company with a convoy. Just over two hours out of port, a violent explosion lifted Sturtevant's stern from the water, but caused no apparent damage. Thinking herself under Submarine attack, the Destroyer dropped two depth charge barrages. About a minute after she dropped the second barrage of charges, a second detonation rocked the ship. She began to settle rapidly, but on an even keel. Minutes later, a third explosion ripped her keel apart beneath the after deckhouse. The midships section sank immediately, and the stern settled soon thereafter. The bow, curiously, remained above water for several hours. Finally, however, all but the crow's nest disappeared beneath the waves. Sturtevant went down off Key West about 8 mi (13 km) north of the Marquesas Keys. Fifteen of her crew were lost with the ship. It was later determined that Sturtevant passed through an American-laid minefield of whose existence the crew had not been notified of...RIP..Lest We Forget.
