UKDJ does their usual trick of sliding in an update to the original story(?) ... it now reads:-

Spanish ship sails through Gibraltar waters playing Spanish anthem
By George Allison - December 4, 2018

A Spanish warship has illegally sailed through the waters of the British territory of Gibraltar, reportedly blasting the Spanish national anthem on loudspeakers.

The ship was the Infanta Elena, a Descubierta class corvette dating from 1980.

Update: Some sources have disputed claims that the national anthem was played, with the Foreign Office confirming this.

The @foreignoffice have confirmed the incursion of Gibraltar
and sources back Navy version of events. No Spanish national
anthem played by the vessel #Gibraltar

Spanish Heavy Cruiser ESPS Canarias pictured at Las Palmas in 1974.
She was built in Spain by the Vickers-Armstrong's subsidiary Sociedad Española de Construcción Naval at Ferrol upon a British design, and was a Modified version of the Royal Navy′s County Class. Canarias saw service during the Spanish Civil War.
Canarias was the flagship of the Nationalist Navy and sank 34 ships, including the Spanish Republican Navy Destroyer Almirante Ferrándiz during the Battle of Cape Espartel, and the Soviet merchant Komsomol off Oran, both in the second half of 1936. Canarias was the main player of the Battle of Cape Machichaco on March 5th 1937, when the Basque Auxiliary Navy naval trawler Nabarra was destroyed. She also damaged the Destroyer José Luis Díez, forcing her to seek refuge at Gibraltar on August 29th 1938. Canarias captured the Republican liner Mar Cantábrico, which was later converted to an Auxiliary Cruiser. During World War II she took part in the search for survivors from the German Battleship Bismarck in May 1941.She remained in commission (due to several repair and refit periods) as the fleet flagship throughout her career. A major refit was planned for Canarias around 1973 to further extend the vessel's life, but a survey of her condition (conducted with help of US Navy personnel) concluded she was too old and obsolete to warrant the work. Some effort was made to turn her into a museum ship, but very little funds were raised for the plan. She was decommissioned in 1975 and then sold for scrap in 1977, but was able to steam under her own power to the scrapyard. A propeller from her was erected at the quayside at Santa Cruz Port, Tenerife.

CANARIAS sister was the BELEARES and was sunk during their Civil War. Of course, these cruisers were based on the RN CAs of the 1920s. The twin funnels certainly had grace and balance the original MASSIVE trunked funnel lacked! ;) The streamlined almost "Art Deco" bridge structure showed their later design evolution from the original RN CAs. Yes I tend to agree Dennis she looks very lumpy mid section , [ bit like me ] but saw service so must have been a capable vessel with all that potential :|

U.S. taxpayer money funded (MDAP, IIRC) much of the repair work that kept CANARIAS going. With the twin funnels and COUNTY like hull, plus "aero" bridge structure quite a handsome 1930s era cruiser. DFO
