Royal Navy Fleet Solid Support ships to be built in the UK

A competition to build three Fleet Solid Support warships – which will launch in Spring 2021 – will help revitalise British shipbuilding by requiring a significant proportion of the build and assembly work to be carried out in the UK.

International companies will be invited to work in collaboration with UK firms to feed in their skills and expertise, but the successful manufacturing team must be led by a British company. This will have a huge impact on the local economies across the UK where shipbuilding is a prominent feature.

Hundreds of highly skilled jobs will be created as a direct result of today’s announcement, with many more in small and medium sized enterprises throughout the supply chain for the new builds to follow over the next few years.

£1.6bn Fleet Solid Support Ship project at risk

The Fleet Solid Support Ship project has been given an “amber/red” rating by the Infrastructure Project Authority, warning that the cancellation and resumption of the competition to build the vessels placed the £1.6bn project at significant risk.
The project was suspended in October 2019 following suggestions that efforts were being made to relaunch the project with a requirement that the ships be built in the UK. The competition was later relaunched, more about that below.
According to the 2021 Annual Report on the Government Major Projects Portfolio from the Infrastructure and Projects Authority, which can be found here, The Fleet Solid Support Ship project is categorised with a level of risk.
“Compared to financial year 19/20-Q2, the Infrastructure Project Authority’s Delivery Confidence Assessment rating increased from Amber to Amber/red.
This is primarily due to the following factors:

3 NEW F.S.S.s

Three new ships are being ordered for the Royal Fleet Auxiliary to support carrier strike group operations around the globe.
The MOD is spending £1.4bn on successors to RFA Fort Victoria to provide ammo, food, spare parts and other supplies, vital to sustaining task groups on front-line operations thousands of miles from the UK.
The trio will be assembled by legendary Belfast firm Harland & Wolff, with sections of the vessels built in Appledore, Devon, and Navantia, Spain, working together as Team Navantia.

The build of new supply ships will largely be at Harland & Wolff’s facilities in Belfast and Appledore and Navantia facilities in Spain, however many aren’t aware that a Scottish yard on the Isle of Lewis will build components for the new ships.

New Navy ships to be built in Titanic shipyard under £1.6bn contract

Team Resolute fended off competition from all-British bid

New Royal Navy vessels are to be built at the Belfast shipyard where the Titanic was built over 100 years ago in a boost for the British shipbuilding industry.

An Anglo-Spanish consortium, which includes the Northern Irish shipyard Harland & Wolff, has been handed the Government contract to build support ships. Final assembly will be done at the Belfast yard where the Titanic was constructed between 1908 and 1912.

The contract has been awarded to Team Resolute, which includes designer BMT, Harland & Wolff and Spain’s Navantia. The group fended off competition from an all-British bid from defence giants BAE Systems and Babcock, as well as an offer from Indian shipyard Larsen & Toubro.

Defence Secretary Ben Wallace said the deal was a “feather in the cap” for Harland & Wolff'.

“Shipbuilding is coming back to Belfast,” he said during a visit to Appledore, Devon, where Harland & Wolff has a y
