Following excerpt is the second paragraph in the Save The Royal Navy linked article, see:-

IOC
Despite the global crisis, on 3 April the RAF formally declared Initial Operating Capability (IOC) for the Poseidon. The first aircraft (call sign STINGRAY01) is participating in a much-reduced version of exercise Joint Warrior being conducted off the western coast of Scotland. Although very early days, this is the first step on restoring a vital part of the UK ability to monitor Russian submarine activity without reliance on foreign MPAs. Poseidon will also give back the ability to conduct long-range search and rescue support to distressed mariners far out to sea.

Third RAF Poseidon named after WW2 Pilot

The third of nine Poseidon maritime patrol aircraft has been named after the highest scoring pilot in Coastal Command in WW2.

Poseidon MRA.1 ZP803 currently being completed in the USA sports the name ‘Terence Bulloch DSO* DFC* RAF’ in recognition of the pilot who made the greatest number of attacks against submarines in the Battle of the Atlantic.

Born in Lisburn, County Antrim, Squadron Leader Bulloch joined the RAF in 1936. Serving with Coastal Command, Squadron Leader Bulloch and his crew shot down two German seaplanes and sank four German U-boats, and severely damaging several others. He was known for his flying skills, innovative tactics and perfect eyesight.

------------------------------

On the 12 October 1942 Bulloch sank a U-boat Mid-Atlantic when flying a Liberator of CXX Squadron on detachment at Reykjavik, Iceland. Then on 8 December the same year, during a convoy escort, he attacked a U-boat wolf pack, sinking a second U-boat and attacking another with the two remaining depth charges. He and his crew then attacked five other submarines with cannon and machine gun fire.

His final U-boat was sunk in the Bay of Biscay on 8 July 1943 flying a Liberator of 224 Sqn from St Eval, Cornwall.

The pilot’s flying log book recorded 350 operational sorties, 4658 flying hours including 2059 hours on operations. Squadron Leader Bulloch passed away in 2014 aged 98.

RAF NEWS

13 Jul 2020
First NATO exercise for RAF Poseidon

The RAF’s newest anti-submarine aircraft has participated in a multi-national training exercise for the first time since arriving in the UK in February.

NATO exercise Dynamic Mongoose has seen personnel from CXX Squadron join ships, submarines and aircraft from six nations to hone anti-submarine warfare (ASW) and anti-surface warfare skills with the new Poseidon MRA1 aircraft in the challenging North Atlantic.

Vice Admiral Keith Blount, Commander of NATO’s Allied Maritime Command said:
Exercises today seize opportunities for NATO and Allied nations to sharpen war-fighting skills by focussing on high-end capabilities. Dynamic Mongoose will ensure we remain prepared for operations in peace, crisis and conflict.

Officer Commanding 120 Squadron, Wing Commander James Hanson said:
Locating and tracking a submarine requires close coordination between ships and aircraft, and Dynamic Mongoose focussed on nuclear-powered submarines in a 200-by-200 square nautical mile box of open ocean.

The RAF Poseidon Captain flying the mission said: “We worked closely with other Maritime Patrol Aircraft in the area to track several simulated targets, relaying this information back to the Task Group on the surface.

“Commonality between platforms along with shared tactics, training, and procedures means that when we do this for real, we are able to quickly locate, identify, and track targets beneath the waves.

On one sortie, using the sophisticated sensor suite fitted to the aircraft, an RAF Poseidon launched simulated attacks within 10 mins of taking over contact from a US Navy Poseidon. This sortie also offered the CXX Squadron crew the opportunity to practise communications, command and control with NATO allies and directed simulated attacks on a submarine by naval vessels.

This exercise participation, at such a complex and challenging level, is the more remarkable considering that the RAF only took delivery of their first Poseidon MRA1 into Kinloss Airfield in early February. Two Poseidon aircraft will operate out of Kinloss whilst runway works are undertaken at RAF Lossiemouth, scheduled for completion later this year.

Robertson hands over £100m strategic facility project at RAF Lossiemouth

Published 23 July 2020

A new £100 million strategic facility, which will be home to a fleet of new Poseidon MRA Mk1 aircraft at RAF Lossiemouth, has been officially handed over by Robertson Construction.

The firm has been working with Boeing, which is providing the facility for Defence Equipment and Support (DE&S), for the last three years. The initial 12 months of the collaboration was spent in pre-construction, during which time the site team, customer and design team focussed on the successful delivery of the project.

A new fleet of Poseidon aircraft will operate from RAF Lossiemouth and the first planes will operate from the base later this year, thanks to the long-term collaborative partnership between Robertson and Boeing.

The 33,000sqm facility, which has bolstered the UK’s maritime patrol capability, comprises squadron accommodation, crew and maintainer training facilities, flight planning facilities, workshop areas and a three-bay aircraft hangar, which is capable of housing three Poseidons at the one time. Over 100,000 tonnes of concrete have been batched on-site during the build, which has seen the involvement of 20 local sub-contractors to supplement the specialist services provided by Robertson’s Tier 1 Supply Chain Partners.

The predominantly steel frame build, which boasts 25,000sqm of cladding is the result of a collaborative partnership from all parties, instilling openness and transparency from the outset of the project.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Anna Keeling, managing director of Boeing Defence UK, said: “We are incredibly proud to be handing over this state-of-the-art facility to DE&S after two years of hard work and investment, and we are excited to begin a new phase of Boeing’s partnership at RAF Lossiemouth.

“It’s a further sign of our commitment to local presence in the UK, skilled job creation as well as UK supplier engagement, and we could not have done it without the support of our Morayshire community partners, both on and off base.”

Robertson will continue work at RAF Lossiemouth to provide an ancillary building to support the strategic facility.
