Lead Boat, Finnish Submarine Vetehinen pictured on launch day at Crichton-Vulcan Shipyard at Turku on June 1st 1930...A 500-tonne Submarine Class of three vessels that was designed and built in the 1920s and early 1930s. The class served in the Finnish Navy during World War II, designed by Dutch dummy company Ingenieurskantoor voor Scheepsbouw den Haag (I.v.S) (set up by Germany after World War I in order to maintain and develop German Submarine know-how and to circumvent the limitations set by the Treaty of Versailles) and built by the Finnish Crichton-Vulcan Shipyard at Turku. The Class was based on the German World War I Type UB III and Type UC III Submarines and served as prototype for Type VII Submarines. Vetehinen-Class Submarines were designed as Minelaying Submarines and were built with mineshafts for 20 mines. Submarines had special inner rails for two torpedo tubes to enable 18 inch torpedoes to be used instead of the standard 21 inch torpedoes. She was scrapped in the 1950's.

Finnish Submarine Saukko pictured under construction and on launch day at Sandvikens Skeppsdocka och Mekaniska Verkstad Shipyard at Hietalahti, Helsinki on July 2nd 1930..Construction of Saukko began in 1928, the design was based on German drawings for the submarine Pu110 (smaller, quickly assemblable Submarine prototype), Saukko was declared ready for service on December 16th 1930. At that time it was the world's smallest Submarine, officially weighing only 99 tonnes, Saukko's crew consisted of 15 men. She was planned for use in Lake Ladoga, and according to the 1920 Treaty of Tartu, no nation was allowed to use naval ships of more than 100 tonnes on the lake (When completed, Saukko weighed somewhat more than this). She was stricken in 1947.
