RN Submarines: O Class 1926

Unread post by jbryce1437 »

The O Class comprised 9 boats, with a further 3 being built for the Chilean Navy. Boats in the Class were Oberon, Odin, Olympus, Orpheus, Osiris, Oswald, Otis. Otway and Oxley were built for the Royal Australian Navy but were transferred back to the Royal Navy in 1931.
Five of the Class were war losses and the remainder were scrapped at the end of the war. The Chilean boats (Capitan O'Brien Class) remained in service until the late 1950's.

Admiralty Department of Naval Construction and Messrs Vickers Ltd Shipyard, Barrow-in-Furness as built blueprint for Odin Class Submarine HMAS Oxley, date stamped January 20th 1928...Oxley and her sister boat Otway were modified units of the British O Class Submarines, from which they differed slightly in appearance. The Os were the first class of Submarines of the post World War I design built for the R.N...Their delivery voyage from the UK was the longest unescorted passage undertaken by British Submarines up to that time and both captains were under orders to proceed on the surface with no diving to be undertaken en route. Heavy weather was encountered during the passage through the Bay of Biscay and during the transit to Malta cracks began appearing in Otway's engine columns. On arrival in Malta both vessels were surveyed and Oxley too was found to have similar cracks in her engine columns. Consequently, both boats were held up in Malta for several months while repairs were made.
