Merchant Navy Memorials

Unread post by limeybiker »

I was quite impressed with the Port of Sydney Nova Scotia, the port played a huge part in the Second World War.
This Memorial to the Merchant Marine really impressed me, it is in a beautiful location on the Harbour Walkway, the weather was very cold but the sun was shining and the photographs came out well, it was sad to see across the harbour to the Ship breakers, but that is were we are all headed.

TRIBUTE TO A VERY BRAVE WOMAN WHO SAILED WITH THE NORWEGIAN MERCHANT MARINE ON ATLANTIC CONVOYS FROM CANADA

PROJECT PARTNER - COBOURG MUSEUM FOUNDATION
55 King Street West, Cobourg, Ontario, K9A 2M2
VIRTUAL INVITATION
Dear Fern Supporter,

The Fern Blodgett Sunde fundraising committee cordially invites you to the virtual unveiling ceremony to be held on Saturday, October 17, 2020 at 1:30 p.m. as we recognize this trailblazing woman and Cobourg resident with the unveiling of her life-sized bronze commemorative statue. This statue also honours all those Canadians who served during the Battle of the Atlantic. The ceremony takes place in the meditation garden at the southeast corner of Victoria Park, Cobourg, by Lake Ontario but because of COVID restrictions we are inviting the majority of our supporters to join us in the virtual celebration.

We hope that on an anniversary date in the future we will be able to meet many of our “friends” in person and we also hope that Fern’s daughters and grandchildren will be able to join us then, when they visit from Norway.
Fern Blodgett Sunde (1918-1991) was the first Canadian female professional wireless radio operator (Sparks) and the first female to serve as a wireless radio operator deep sea. She made seventy-eight successful transatlantic crossings during the Battle of the Atlantic, one of WWII’s longest and most perilous engagements. Her ship, the Norwegian merchant navy vessel, the M/S Mosdale, carried essential supplies and personnel to Britain and Europe while evading enemy aircraft and U-boats. Fern was a true Canadian heroine.
The ceremony may be viewed live on Cobourg Media Facebook and Cobourg Media Youtube or at
http://www.cobourgmedia.ca/fernblodgettsunde .

We hope you will be able to join us on line.
Sincerely,

Leona Woods, Chair and Helen Vari, Honorary Chair of the Fern Blodgett Sunde and the Battle of the Atlantic Statue Committee
