Royal Navy

Do you know the story behind this fine piece of Navy craftsmanship produced by engineers at HMS Collingwood?
Half a century ago they toiled in their spare time to produce the first item of regalia for the new Fareham Borough Council – the mayoral mace, which remains in use to this day.
With the borough’s 50th anniversary looming, the mayor’s office – and the family of the officer who headed the team of engineers – are keen to know the story of the mace’s creation.

Royal Navy

Farewell old friends.
Today we said goodbye to HMS Sabre and HMS Scimitar after nearly 30 years in service.
The patrol ships were decommissioned at Portsmouth Naval Base after long careers, which notably saw them serve as guard ships in Gibraltar for some 17 years.
They returned to the UK two years ago from Gibraltar, with HMS Dasher and HMS Pursuer taking over duties around the Rock temporarily as two modern £5m boats, HMS Cutlass and HMS Dagger, work towards full operations.

David Ellis Report: Battleships

David Ellis and retired Royal Navy officer Brian Gerrish ask whether, despite the government trying to reassure the public with increased defence spending, the reality is that the UK is rapidly losing sovereign national defence to a web of political and corporatist interests.
