South Korea decommissions 3 Pohang-class corvettes, 5 Chamsuri-class fast patrol boatsSouth Korea decommissions 3 Pohang-class corvettes, 5 Chamsuri-class fast patrol boats

No confirmation has been made on the fate of the decommissioned ships.

The ROKN has been modernizing its naval forces, retiring frontline combat ships from the 1980s including the Pohang-class corvettes, Ulsan-class frigates and Chamsuri-class fast patrol boats.

Over the years, these ships have been replaced with the Incheon and Daegu-class frigates, as well as the upcoming FFX-3 frigate, as well as the Yoon Youngha-class patrol vessels.|

Seveal of the Pohang-class corvettes have already been transferred to other countries including Colombia, Egypt, Peru, the Philippines, and Vietnam.

KDX-III Batch-II Analysis

The first initial ship will launch {July2022}

- 11,000 t
- Aegis baseline KII <9.C2>(BMD5.0)
- COGLAG propulsion for best ASW.
- Radar software enhanced.
- Especially ASW dramatically advanced
With doubled size bow sonar and Bi-static sonar systems. BMS+VDS+MFTA
- Additional radar installed for guide
KSAAM and sea skimming threats.
● SM-6 and 3 for best AAW, BMD
● VLS slightly reduced due to
Quad packed KSAAM and KVLS-II
● Basically 'Aegis' , but Batch-II will
Have serious firepower both
Anti ship, surface strike capabilities.
● KVLS-II is still mystery.
It is similar to US MK.57 large VLS.
The ROKN may have plan for integration
Of 'Hycore' hypersonic cruise missile
Or 'KTSSM' short range ballistic missile.
■ Actually KDDX was priority to ROKN
Rather than KDX-III Batch-II
The KDDX will commence very soon.

HHI Launches South Korea’s First KDX III Batch II Destroyer

South Korean shipbuilder Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) today launched the lead ship of the KDX-III Batch-II AEGIS destroyer project for the Republic of Korea (ROK) Navy: ROKS Jeongjo the Great.

According to the ROK Navy and Defense Acquisition Program Administration (DAPA), the launching ceremony of the first ship of the ‘KDX-Ⅲ Batch-II’ project, the ‘Jeongjo the Great’, was held at the Hyundai Heavy Industries shipyard in Ulsan on the morning of the 28th.

“The King Jeongjo, which was independently designed and built in Korea, was launched on the same day after signing a construction contract in 2019 and following a groundbreaking ceremony last year. The vessel is named after a historical figure revered by the people or a national defender who greatly contributed to overcoming the national crisis. The 22nd king of Joseon, Jeongjo (reigned 1776–1800), ascended to the throne at the age of 23 after the death of his grandfather Yeongjo (reigned 1724–1776), the 21st king, and reigned for 24 years. He is evaluated to have led the revival of the late Joseon Dynasty, including the construction of Suwon Hwaseong Fortress. When Jeongjo the Great is commissioned, it will be the 4th Aegis destroyer and the first 8200-ton class destroyer of the ROK Navy following the existing 7600-ton class ‘Sejong the Great’, ‘Yulgok Yii’ and ‘Seoaeryu Seongyong'”.

South Korea launched the first of an upgraded version of the world’s most heavily armed destroyer, pushing ahead in East Asia’s naval arms race.
South Korea is expected to have six powerful 10,000-plus-tonne destroyers operating by the end of this decade, while China is expected to have at least eight.
The first of the KDX III Batch II destroyers, Jeongjo the Great, was launched on July 28 and is expected to be delivered by November 2024. Construction of the ship began in 2021.

ROKS Dosan Ahn Changho Deploys For The First Time

On August 16th, the Republic of Korea Navy (ROKN) confirmed that its first ship-in-class KSS III submarine, ROKS Dosan Ahn Changho, has been operationally deployed for the first time. The feat is the culmination of three years of testing and trials following the submarine’s launch in 2018.

South Korea's first KSS III submarine set sails for its maiden operational deployment

ROKS Dosan Ahn Changho, which was commissioned in August 2021, has already made headlines multiple times for conducting submarine-launched ballistic missiles (SLBMs) tests. Many see the deployment of the vessel as a major milestone, marking the first time the country’s SLBMs will be at sea in an operationally-ready capacity.
