The warmest of welcomes for HMS Richmond into Jakarta Indonesia.

The ceremony included our EWO WO1 Matt Farr giving a speech ahead of the presentation of a cheque to the families of KRI Nanggala, from the charity We Are Submariners.

Gulf artisans replace Montrose’s Artisan to keep frigate at the cutting edge

Engineers supporting Royal Navy operations in the Gulf completed a first – replacing HMS Montrose’s principal radar in theatre, without sending her 7,500 miles home to Plymouth.
Artisan – Advanced Radar Target Indication Situational Awareness and Navigation ¬– is the principal medium-range eyes of the Fleet, fitted to all frigates and capital ships.

It can see targets up to 200 kilometres – 125 miles – away from the ship and, thanks to its software, keep tabs on 900 targets simultaneously, including missiles inbound at three times the speed of sound.

Montrose’s Artisan has been spinning almost non-stop since the ship emerged from refit in December 2017.

And since she arrived in the Gulf in the spring of 2019 as the Royal Navy’s constant ‘big ship’ presence in the Middle East under the ever-growing forward presence programme, the frigate and her radar have been heavily in demand.

That constant action and the punishing Middle East environment of heat/sand/dust have taken their toll, prompting a replacement.

HMS Northumberland arrived in the River Tyne this morning. She was just being pushed alongside when I spotted her. She is in until 15th then heads out to sea at 0945 and back in again at 1400, then finally departs at 1615. I presume she is taking VIP's to sea for a "jolly" on 15th.
