NEWS:British Royal Navy Squadron "escapes" to the Philippines

After Hongkong was turned over to Communist China, the three biggest combat ships of the British Royal Navy "Hongkong Squadron" set sail for the Philippines arriving in Manila last July 3,1997. These were the HMS Peacock, HMS Plover and HMS Starling.

These three(3) "Peacock class" corvettes were turned over to the Philippine Navy last July 3, 1997.

After long negotiations, these 712 ton sister ships were purchased by the Philippine Navy for the "friendship price" of 6.5 million British Pounds. Each ship carries an Italian OTO Melara rapid fire 76mm automatic cannon. Additional guns have been ordered fitted to these ships by the Filipinos.

HMS Peacock (P239), HMS Plover (P240), and HMS Starling (P241) were sold to the Philippines and were officially turned over to the Philippine Navy on 1 August 1997 after Hong Kong was returned to China. In Philippine service they are designated Emilio Jacinto-class corvettes, and have been considerably 'up-gunned' with a 25 mm M242 Bushmaster and two 20 mm Oerlikon guns.

Philippine Navy Jose Rizal Class Guided Missile Frigate BRP Antonio Luna pictured at Subic Bay..2022...Designed and built by Hyundai Heavy Industries of South Korea, she is a derivative of the Incheon Class Frigates of the Republic of Korea Navy. Changes were made on the base design by making use of features found on newer Frigates of the R.O.K. Navy, considering reduced radar cross-section by having cleaner lines, smooth surface design, reduced overhangs and a low free-board.
