killick sparker = leading radio operator

CY(Q) = Communication Yeoman (Qualifying course)

Liam Walker Front row, right has a sparkers badge. Did they interchange back in the day?
Chris Brown Liam Walker From when I joined in 1963 all comms ratings had the same branch badge. Joined as a JRO(U)..
Patrick Smyth VR Liam Walker, except the Yeoman obviously, they (we) ALL had to wear 'sparkers badges' at the time

I remember the (U) thing; but had completely forgotten about buntings and sparkers wearing the same badge (except Yeoman of course). Somehow thought that the made their choice at RO2(U) when deciding which specialisation they would follow and the badge followed the specialisation.

I left in '74, a year after the date of that CY(Q) course so should have remembered :oops:
