HMS Glowworm. In 1940, Glowworm engaged in battle with the German heavy cruiser Hipper. Outgunned and badly damaged she rammed Hipper in a final act of defiance. She went down with most of her crew, although Hipper rescued over 40 sailors. Unusually the Captain of Hipper contacted the Admiralty and recommended the VC be awarded to her Captain. Which it was, posthumously.
