She kept in touch with the ship through the onboard news letter and was very distressed when she was bombed and sunk during the Falklands war; the Govt agreed that all ships sunk would be replaced so a new Coventry type 22 frigate, was built but quite soon after she was commissioned she was sold abroad. They asked Mum to launch the replacement but she declined. The new Coventry was sold to Romania in 2001/1.

There is a good web site devoted to the T42 Coventry, here;-

David Hart Dyke also wrote a book about Coventry and her loss.

Well lets hope that some lessons were learnt from this loss Tim , and help put into perspective the lack of infallibility that some had about missile destroyers , and their limited defence, in a long action against enemy aircraft ,.....with their own missiles / bombs...... and there affect on vessels once hit in an engagement . :(

I couldn't believe my luck when I walked into Poundland (my favourite shop) one day and there were copies of the book on the shelf for £1. Needless to say it is now in my collection and I would thoroughly recommend it to anyone.

somewhere I have pictures of Edinburgh, one of the last serving T42s alongside Belfast, I went onboard and had a coffee with her captain and presented him with Frank Pearce's superb book "Last call for HMS Edinburgh" which is a first hand account of the loss of the wartime cruiser sister to Belfast (Arctic).

oops, attached this one of Westminster by mistake

Very sad to see Edinburgh making her final voyage, she carried the same number D97 as my father's first command, Corunna. Seen here turning in the Pool of London.

From where I'm sitting that looks a tight turn for the Thames Tim but obviously not for the crew at the time, great shots , thanks for sharing .
