and more....including Alan Easton, on the bridge; Easton was a former merchant marine officer, he served in the RCN in corvettes, including Sackville and then a frigate and destroyer in escort groups, by the end of the war he was burnt out, never wanted to see the sea again. He wrote a book about his experiences in the War called "50 North" which is highly recommended for anyone wanting to understand just how scrappy life was in these heroic little ships

Looking forward to seeing Sackville on our next Canadian cruise, she was absent when we visited a couple of years ago, but we enjoyed the city tremendously and are booked to revisit 2022.
There are lots of memorials around the dock area, but this one caught my eye.

A fitting tribute to those gallant souls. Did you take a photo of the rear of the memorial Barry?

To be fair there is a lot of work going on with HMSB but its hard to determine progress from the crowsnest, todays news is that the reopening is planned for July by which time they hope to have painted the entire topsides, defo needs it!

I am in almost daily comms with Sackville and Halifax just now, just sourced a set of original builders plans for a Montague Whaler for them to build a new one.

Just for info re RCN; there is a big plan to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the end of the Battle of the Atlantic (frustrated last year) with the RCN sending two of their OPV ships to Londonderry to join the 3-day event being organised by the #12 Branch of the RNA, i will keep you all posted as i hear more, the virus restrictions remain a threat but with luck they will be allowed to go ahead regardless but with "conditions".

ref the visit of the 2 patrol boats to visit Londonderry in May these are Kingston class ships, see earlier post on these, one of the visitors will be Summerside, i cant recall the name of the other, they are about the same size as a Flower Class corvette tipping the scales at just under 1,000 tons. Just as well as visiting Londonderry these days means transiting under the new bridge, not there in WWII, and having sufficiently shallow draught to avoid grounding in the undredged channel. I dont know if the RN will send a ship, when i do i will post it.

Unfortunately the bottom was cut off, when we go next year, if we go, I will make sure I get a better photo, it really is a lovely city to visit and the waterfront is historically great, I am looking forward to visiting the Sackville, my old shipmate from HMS President, Al Simpson served aboard her for many years.
