Re. HMS Shoulton M1182 and her outboard motor
HMS Shoulton with outboard motor (3).jpg

What was the thinking behind this installation ... more speed ?; more maneuverability ?; more space aft ? or ???

Presumably the guard provided protection for the propulsion (screws) from any towing gear.

Well some of my presumptions were partially correct, see:-

EQUIPMENT AND SYSTEMS

The early ships were fitted with twin v-12 Mirrlees engines, but from M 1130 onwards, innovative Napier Deltic powerplants were fitted. In 1965-66 Shoulton was the trial ship for an auxiliary propulsion system using water jets to reduce noise, and was equipped with the Sperry Towed Acoustic Generator.

also this:-

SHOULTON was converted to a prototype minehunter in 1963 for a competitive ‘Hunt-off’ against the USN’s AN/UQS-1. SHOULTON won hands down. She, later, trialled a Pump Jet Propulsion System in 1967. She was broken up in 1981.

I knew about the Sea Stallion helicopter minesweeper and the HIFR helicpoter trial from small ship (a Type 12 frigate - HMS Rothesay) .... but not this evolution/trial

HMS Gavinton being towed at 5 kt by Whirlwind helicopter of the Special Trials Flight, 705 NAS, RNAS Lee-on-the-Solent 10 Oct 1957. Presumably, the trial intended to determine whether broken-down MCMV could safely be extricated from minefield.

which was the one run down by Abdiel in disastrous circumstances; they were fine little ships. More of them than the entire RN these days, sadly.

Was it HMS Fittleton, Tim?

No - she was in collision with Mermaid and rolled over, see:-

HMS Fittleton's collision remains the worst ever peacetime accident involving the Royal Naval Reserves.

40 years after the sinking, the village of Fittleton are remembering the 12 Royal Naval personnel who died.

Every year, since she sunk on the 20th of September 1976, a memorial service takes place in the ship's namesake village of Fittleton, in Wiltshire.

This year around 80 people attended the service, including 14 survivors.

The British minesweeper sank after attempting to come alongside a much larger frigate, HMS Mermaid, whilst en route to Hamburg for teamwork operations.

HMS Fittleton capsized in under a minute, the 32 survivors were picked from the sea and the wreck was lifted and sent for scrapping.

12 men lost their lives, of which 11 were Royal Naval Reserve volunteers.

For everyone at the service, remembering those who lost their lives is paramount.
