HELIOS laser weapon system takes step toward ship Integration
By George Allison - March 12, 20200
Lockheed Martin and the U.S. Navy have moved one step closer to integrating a laser weapon system onto an Arleigh Burke destroyer.

The firm successfully conducted a Critical Design Review for the ‘High Energy Laser with Integrated Optical-dazzler and Surveillance’ (HELIOS) system.

“Our adversaries are rapidly developing sophisticated weapons and the threats to the U.S. Navy’s fleet are getting more challenging,” said Hamid Salim, vice president, Advanced Product Solutions at Lockheed Martin Rotary and Mission Systems.

“Our warfighters need this capability and capacity now to effectively counter threats such as unmanned aerial systems and fast attack vessels.”

Lockheed say that this year, HELIOS will undergo system integration in Moorestown, New Jersey — the home of Aegis Combat System development.

“The HELIOS system will then be tested at the Wallops Island Navy land-based test site which will significantly reduce program risk before being delivered to a shipyard for integration into an Arleigh Burke destroyer next year. In addition to being built into the ship’s structure, HELIOS will become an integrated component of the ship’s Aegis combat system.”

“HELIOS will provide an additional layer of protection for the fleet—deep magazine, low cost per kill, speed of light delivery, and precision response. Additional HELIOS systems will accelerate the warfighter learning curve, provide risk reduction for future laser weapon system increments and provide a stronger demand signal to the supply base,” said Brendan Scanlon, HELIOS program director, Lockheed Martin Rotary and Mission Systems, in a news release.

US Navy Destroyer USS Porter enters Black Sea
By George Allison - April 24, 20200
The Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer USS Porter has been operating in the Black Sea for four days days on patrol.

“Porter is underway on her 8th forward deployed naval forces-Europe patrol, after taking precautions to ensure the health and safety of their crew. With the support of partners and allies, Porter will remain safely at sea, focusing on operational requirements and executing national tasking during the COVID 19 response.”

The US Navy say that upon arrival in the Black Sea, Porter conducted maneuvering operations with the Romanian frigate Regina Maria (F222) in the Black Sea, demonstrating the strength and cooperation of nations across the NATO alliance.

“Porter has routinely operated in the Black Sea over the past few years, demonstrating our continued commitment to security and stability in the region.” said Cmdr. Craig Trent, commanding officer of USS Porter.

“We’re excited to be back in early 2020. The crew and I have been looking forward to strengthening our relationship with our regional maritime partners.”

Porter began its north-bound international strait transit en route to the Black Sea April 13th to conduct maritime security operations and enhance regional maritime stability, combined readiness, and naval capability with our NATO allies and partners in the region.

This is the second time a U.S. Navy ship has visited the Black Sea since the beginning of 2020. The last ship to visit the Black Sea was USS Ross (DDG 77) in January.

USS Kidd Diverts to San Diego with Coronavirus Outbreak, Over A Quarter Test Positive

USS Kidd, an Arleigh Burke-class destroyer, was diverted to San Diego following a shipboard outbreak of the coronavirus. The ship had been deployed off South America on an anti-drug-trafficking mission when the outbreak occurred. So far, 64 of the crew on the Kidd have tested positive, or roughly 27% of the sailors tested so far.
While on its way to San Diego, the Kidd rendezvoused with the amphibious assault ship USS Makin Island which is equipped with an onboard intensive care unit staffed by a fleet surgical team to assist with care and screening of the crew.
Once alongside in San Diego, the Navy immediately began to moved the crew ashore for isolation and treatment and has begun to disinfect and decontaminate the ship.
As of late last week, 26 US Navy ships have reported at least one case of COVID-19 among their crews. Only the Kidd and the aircraft carrier Theodore Roosevelt have suffered outbreaks while at sea. Navy officials said Monday that 955 Roosevelt sailors have active cases of the novel coronavirus or approximately 20 percent of the ship’s 4,800-person crew.

BAE to modernise American destroyer in $103.5m contract

BAE Systems has received a $103.5 million contract from the U.S. Navy for the maintenance and modernisation of the Arleigh Burke class destroyer USS Preble.
BAE say in a news release that under the depot maintenance period (DMP) availability contract awarded, BAE Systems will dry-dock the ship, perform underwater hull preservation work, upgrade the ship’s Aegis combat system and its command and control equipment, and refurbish the living spaces for the ship’s 280 crew members. The work is expected to begin in October 2020 and be completed in February 2022.
“The depot maintenance availability BAE Systems will perform aboard USS Preble is complex and critical,” said David M. Thomas Jr., vice president and general manager of BAE Systems San Diego Ship Repair.
“Our team of employees, subcontractors and Navy personnel have a great deal of experience with the DDG class and look forward to ushering the USS Preble into its next phase of fleet readiness.”
BAE Systems’ San Diego shipyard is completing similar work aboard the guided missile destroyer USS Shoup.
“USS Preble is the 38th ship in the Arleigh Burke class and was commissioned in June 2002. The ship is named in honor of Commodore Edward Preble, an early 19th century U.S. Navy hero. Five previous U.S. naval combatants were named after the commodore. The value of the competitively awarded contract could reach $117.7 million if all options are exercised.”
