RN Depot, Repair and Support Ships:
I was in HMS Tyne twice, first time on passage from Malta to Singapore, second time when she was Defiance in Devonport.

The previous HMS Tyne, formerly used as a troopship and was a Torpedo Boat Destroyer Depot ship during the First World War. She sank in the River Medway in 1920 after springing a leak while awaiting to be sold.

Well done Lads I wondered where these were going to be slotted , and you beat me to it , not that I knew any of them , but with such a comprehensive list of Naval ships blossoming forth I thought it may have been overlooked ......Fear not.... you have it in hand
Have any of you any details or drawings of their layout ,and specific services they provided rather than generalities please .

The main problem is the shear number of the types of ships and classes that the RN has had in service over the years and we have barely scratched the surface to dateivorthediver wrote: ↑Wed Oct 17, 2018 5:13 pm Well done Lads I wondered where these were going to be slotted , and you beat me to it , not that I knew any of them , but with such a comprehensive list of Naval ships blossoming forth I thought it may have been overlooked ......Fear not.... you have it in hand
Here are a few of HMS Adamant, submarine depot ship completed in 1942, she looked very similar to HMS Tyne and is often confused with her in photos (hopefully these are all correct )

Re: RN Depot, Repair and Support Ships:
Thank you very much Jim , the main reason I ask is that my late uncle served on one of these during the war but alas I don't know which one....but he was a stocker by trade .jbryce1437 wrote: ↑Wed Oct 17, 2018 5:23 pmThe main problem is the shear number of the types of ships and classes that the RN has had in service over the years and we have barely scratched the surface to dateivorthediver wrote: ↑Wed Oct 17, 2018 5:13 pm Well done Lads I wondered where these were going to be slotted , and you beat me to it , not that I knew any of them , but with such a comprehensive list of Naval ships blossoming forth I thought it may have been overlooked ......Fear not.... you have it in hand

I have often been curious as to exactly what they were capable of repairing and to what extent "Repaired" rather than maintained .
I know they had cabins for there own and the vessels crew requiring repair , and I imagine they were primary a source of stores for whatever decipline they were allotted to i.e. General . submarine , Destroyers ,Etc machine shops , etc but no one seems to be sure of what exactly they did and to what level they took their repairs to .

HMS Alaunia was requisitioned from the Cunard shipping line in August 1939 and converted to an Armed Merchant Cruiser. In 1944 she was sold to the Admiralty and converted to a Repair Ship. She was scrapped at Blyth in Northumberland in 1956.

HMS Ambrose was built in 1903 as a cargo liner purchased by the Admiralty in December 1914 and converted to an Armed Merchant Cruiser and later, in 1917, to a submarine depot ship. She was renamed Cochrane in 1938 and was scrapped in 1946.
