The R Class was a class of 12 (2 were later cancelled) diesel-electric boats and were the forerunners of the hunter-killer submarine of today. With the exception of R4 and R10, all were scrapped in 1923. The latter two were used for training at Portland.

The R.4 was universally known as `The Slug' - due to her `low-profile', also to her poor steering ability, due to her `single-screw'.
