The D Class were the first submarines capable of operating beyond coastal waters and were designed for foreign service. Some 10 boats were laid down, but only 8 were completed and the remaining two were completed as E Class boats. These boats were the first to be fitted with wireless transmitters. They were designed with deck guns forward of the conning tower and had an endurance range of over 2,500 miles. All served in the First World War, during which, four of them were lost.
