An Sikorsky HO-4 from Icebreaker USS Glacier pictured over RNZAF Station Wigram in 1956,the Base was the HQ for 'Operation Deep Freeze' during the '50's.

Well wishers farewell Antarctic Supply Ship HMNZS Endeavour as she departs Wellington for McMurdo Sound in 1957...In June 1956 the New Zealand government purchased this Ailanthus Class wooden hulled Ex Net-layer for £20,000, it was decided that this vessel would carry the name Endeavour. Endeavour was commissioned to transport the New Zealand section of the Commonwealth Trans-Antarctic Expedition which included Edmund Hillary.
