RN Battleships: HMS Vanguard
a few more Vanguard pictures and one of Jim's superb paintings of the the USS Washington, battleship, on distant convoy cover in the Arctic in case Tirpitz or Scharnhorst should slip out. The presence of US battleships on this duty is not generally known but they were there....

This photo was taken in 1950 when guardship for the Cowes Royal Regatta. I was in Vanguard at that time & remember viewing the Queen Mary with awe.

Re: RN Battleships: HMS Vanguard
Quite a good design, having worked lessons of the war into her along with modernizing the WW1 vintage 15". These were still fine, powerful weapons in the WW2 era. She never fired her guns in anger, and IIRC, only 2 of the 15" turrets were fully manned and operational at all times? The increased elevation the turrets became capable of, for longer range, shows clearly in the foredeck photo.
Her 5.25s were upgraded in a redesigned turret from the turret used in the KGVs and DIDOs. Her hull form and sheer at the bow helped make her a very good sea boat. DFO

She was certainly a handsome looking ship and would have made a great floating museum.
