Not sure if anyone has posted a link to this video about The Last Battleship before but it lasts around 9 minutes and is very interesting, albeit just before my time in the RN.

Right gents ... been having a bit of a nosey around and methinks the 'holes' ain't holes - rather they are the right angled securing flanges at each end of that metal(?) band around the muzzle thingy within which the tompion is located.

The gun barrels on KGV appear to have the same arrangement, see:-

- here is another query; what might that be (arrowed) under the leg of the sailor stradling the port barrel of 'Y' gun turret

- and another; what is that dark feature behind the sailor stradling the stbd barrel of 'Y' gun turret in the attachment below derived from a 'gettyimages' photo.

Were not canvas boots tied in place for foul weather protection of the rifling ?

I believe so Ivor and am sure I have seen images of them in place over gun barrel muzzles

Took a screenshot of a page offered up by a Google Book Search and underlined/highlighted (in red) a short passage that might be of interest. (click on attachment to view/read clear print)
