I was a Boiler Room watchkeeper when this photo was taken, I was obviously not on watch then, I never made black smoke!

I never met a Stoker or Tiff / Mech who would admit ownership of Black Smoke . They always said "Down here it is ours , topside anyone can have it"

As I've heard on many occasions from "Cinder Shifters" after blowing soot, It's ours 'til it leaves the funnel, then it's the Buffers!! Nothing like a bit of inter branch banter!

what a splendid photo; I hope that H&W will secure the new contract for the RFA solid support ship in their JV with Navantia, this company is so much a part of the maritime heritage.
