Vanguard had an unusual machinery lay out. In addition to the four main units she had two Harbour Machinery Rooms. When the ship was in harbour these rooms would supply electrical power & fresh water from evaporators. I don't know of any other ship that had a similar arrangement. My recollection is that these two spaces were athwartship between the two forr'd units & two after units.

Battleship HMS Vanguard pictured anchored in the Firth of Clyde during Exercise Mainbrace in 1952.....Exercise Mainbrace was the first large-scale naval exercise undertaken by the newly established Allied Command Atlantic, one of the two principal military commands of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization...In the background is Baltimore Class Heavy Cruiser USS Quincy.
