Cruisers: Émile Bertin

Unread post by designeraccd »

The French built a one off light cruiser that proved successful, and helped pave the way for the GLORIE (I can spell that!) class.

The EB fought in the Norwegian campaign and carried French gold to Canada for safe keeping. She was active throughout the war. A fast, well armed, but lightly armored cruiser. DFO

Yup, the one and only! The first studies for her were ok'd in Dec, 1928. She was authorized under the 1930 building program. The French Navy wanted high speed, therefore she was given a fairly high length to beam ratio of 10.5 to 1. She was designed to make 34 knots, quite high when commissioned in May 34.

She was 177 m o.a. x 15.84 m. 8480 tons, full load. Her protection was light: 30 mm max. Nine 152 mm, 4-90 mm AA (1 twin, 2 singles) plus 4-37mm, 8-13.2 mm and 6-550mm T.T. Her 152 mm were designed for the second generation post WW1 cruisers, of which she was the first CL. She also had a catapult and 1 2 seat floatplane, as built. DFO

Here is a very late photo of EMIL BERTIN along with SUFFREN and the JEAN BART in reserve at Toulon, 1959. :) All would become "razor blades" in the not to distant future. DFO
