Balao Class Submarine USS Seahorse pictured departing Mare Island Navy Yard for sea trials on June 16th 1943...She had eight successful war patrols during WWII. Her duties were mostly attacking enemy shipping, but she also served as a lifeguard ship for downed pilots during air assaults. Her kill flag boasts twenty-three kills (twenty merchantmen and three warships) and three ships damaged. However, the Joint Army-Navy Assessment Committee (JANAC) officially credited her with 20 kills for a total of 75,529 tons.
