Chinese 'spy ship' Yuan Wang 5 docks in Sri Lanka despite Indian concern

A Chinese research ship has docked in Sri Lanka's Hambantota port despite Indian concerns.

The Yuan Wang 5 was given permission to dock on the condition it would not carry out research while in Sri Lankan waters, said port officials.

India had previously voiced concerns that the ship would be used to spy on its activities, said media reports.

Sri Lanka's Foreign Ministry said the ship will be allowed to remain in the Chinese-run port until 22 August.

Foreign security analysts quoted by Reuters describe the Yuan Wang 5 as one of China's latest generation space-tracking ships, used to monitor satellite, rocket and intercontinental ballistic missile launches.

Several Indian media reports described it as a "dual-use spy ship". Shipping analytics websites call it a research and survey vessel.

One report by Indian news site NDTV said the government in Delhi was concerned about "the possibility of the ship's tracking systems attempting to snoop on Indian installations while on its way to Sri Lanka".

Earlier in July, an Indian foreign ministry spokesman said the government was monitoring the ship's planned visit, adding that Delhi would protect its security and economic interests.

According to a Reuters report, India had lodged a verbal protest with the Sri Lankan government against the ship's visit.

Reports that China Has Developed Prototype Submarine Flying Drones

There are reports that researchers from Nanjing University of Aeronautics in eastern China have developed a prototype flying submarine drone capable of operating underwater or in the air.

According to a report by the South China Morning Post, the flying submarine can support various military missions, including the detection of underwater mines.

Chinese professor Ji Wanfeng says the new drone will make it possible to disrupt the defense systems of enemy aircraft carriers. The drone can dive underwater to avoid radar. When detected by sonar, the drone can take off into the air. According to the professor, the simultaneous use of several such drones could overwhelm the computer systems of aircraft carriers.

Chinese scientists plan boron-powered supersonic missile that can fly and swim

Anti-ship device will be able to cruise at commercial airliner altitudes and reach 200 knots underwater, project team says
Volatile element that reacts in both air and water will power the ‘cross-media’ weapon
China is developing a supersonic anti-ship missile that will be able to travel further and faster than any traditional torpedo, according to researchers involved in the project.
The 5 metre (16.4 feet) missile will be able to cruise at 2.5 times the speed of sound at about 10,000 metres (32,800 feet) – the same altitude as a commercial airliner – for 200km (124 miles) before diving and skimming across the waves for up to 20km.
Once it is within about 10km of its target, the missile will go into torpedo mode, travelling underwater at up to 100 metres per second (200 knots) using supercavitation – the formation of a giant air bubble around it which significantly reduces drag, according to the researchers.

China sends fighter jets over US destroyers in show of force

Chinese fighter jets flew over a US destroyer in the western Pacific in a show of force by Beijing amid an increasing American presence in the region.
The two J-15 carrier-based jets appeared to take off from the Liaoning, China’s first aircraft carrier, before flying over a US Arleigh Burke-class destroyer, state-controlled media showed.

With Over 2000 Pilots Killed, China Is Struggling With Its Aviators Despite Three Aircraft Carriers & An Enormous Air Force

China’s ambitions to develop cutting-edge aircraft achieved a significant turning point when the J-10, a homegrown fourth-generation jet fighter, was introduced in 1998 by the state-owned Chengdu Aircraft Industry Group.

According to a Chinese media report, the J-10 project was greatly aided by a five-person team of Chinese test pilots trained to fly US warplanes aircraft in the UK. This also paved the way for creating the technologically sophisticated J-20 fifth-generation aircraft.
The SCMP report claimed that Lei Qiang, the son of a Korean war pilot and a member of the five-person team, was chosen to fly the first flight of the J-10 on March 23, 1998.
Just six months before that, the report said that Lei and his four companions had learned to operate the American aircraft from an international test pilot academy established by a former flight instructor at the UK’s Aeroplane and Armament Experimental Establishment.
