They were diesel powered and lacked the speed for fast carrier escort, but their role was ocean surveillance and air control for slower escorts. Llandaff was sold to Bangladesh and Chichester was used as harbour guardship at Hong Kong and was broken up in 1981.

I have been sent this photo to identify. I can tell she’s a Type 61 Cathedral (Salisbury) class air direction frigate with a 965 double bedstead radar but which one? And was the photo taken while she was still in the RN or after she was sold to Bangladesh? The number 29 on the main mast should be a clue but none of the RN flotillas/squadrons seem to fit.
Any help appreciated.

Rob, I have checked all my photos of this class and cannot find any with 29 on the funnel. A search for the 29th Escort Squadron also drew a blank.

Further to the above herewith an image from the WNS World Naval Ships that shows Chichester F59 with a 29 on her funnel.
