Swedish Navy

Finished post WW2 were 2 elegant Swedish CLs that served long and well in the Baltic and one later off South America with Chile. The original design evolved some so that the second unit was completed with a "1950s" look bridge complex versus the 1930 "look" of the first unit. They carried a rather unusual main armament of 7 guns: a triple 6" on bow and 2 twins on stern. Shades of German WW2 era cls for layout.

They conducted early experiments with a small helo from one unit, too. DFO

Pretty much like later soviet SVERDLOVS. The 14 completed SVERDLOVs apparently were better armored tho, plus considerably more tonnage!! DFO

The Swedish Fleet had one pre-war cruiser, too. She was originally a "seaplane cruiser", but was modified to carry more light AA. The GOTLAND's historical claim to fame would be spotting the BISMARCK and PRINZ EUGEN as they were leaving the Baltic. Her report alerted the RN that the 2 Germans were sailing.

She was perhaps the last warship built with casemate guns; very visible in the bow photo.

One more earlier, long serving cruiser from Sweden was the FLYGIA. Note the beam turrets...all 6". DFO

Thanks Dennis , quite a formidable arsenal for a relatively small navy [ unless I have missed something ].
