Sweden’s Blekinge-class submarine becomes Russia’s new nightmare

Blekinge-class submarines are said by military experts to cause anxiety to Russia when Sweden officially joins NATO. On June 30, the Royal Swedish Navy started construction of its first Blekinge-class submarine, numbered A26, which is expected to replace the Gotlands by the end of the decade. Saab Group representatives are excited about the Blekinge-class submarine and the company’s CEO praised the new ship’s qualities in an interview with Naval News magazine. Saab CEO Micael Johansson said: “Sweden’s advanced scientific and technological capabilities put Sweden in one of the few countries in the world capable of building modern submarines.”

Sweden's new submarine could shift balance of power in the Baltic Sea

Normally, Sweden building its first new class of submarines in 30 years wouldn't be of as much interest, but Saab laying the keel of its first Blekinge-class (A26) boat on June 30 as Sweden waits to join NATO signals a shift in the balance of power in the Baltic Sea.

For a country with a submarine fleet numbering a grand total of five, Sweden is surprisingly innovative when it comes to underwater warfare and has a reputation for producing highly advanced submarine designs on a regular basis.

During the Second World War, officially Sweden found itself caught between Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union, and took its policy of armed neutrality very seriously as the Cold War arrived in the 1940s. The country quickly adapted highly advanced ideas for submarines from the Germans and the British, including sound dampening pads, anti-acoustic tiles, and sonar- and radar-absorbing materials.

HSwMS Gävle, corvette swedish navy, getting out from maintenance in a secluded base.

Muskö is the largest underground naval base in the world. Its the size of Stockholm's Old Town. It's got an underground shipyard that can repair any ship up to destroyer size. Several at the same time.
