It some ways the intended global role suggests that they are a new cruiser type vessel. They will have long endurance, capabilities for independent operations, and interoperability with NATO and Pacific allies. The gestation period will present challenges as technologies and world events for not remain static from now to the early 2030s when the last ships are delivered.
TR my understanding is that the hull has been designed to be upgraded over the years as new systems of all sorts become available.

The chairman of The House of Commons Defence Select Committee has written to the Defence Secretary to urge action to prevent the move of the GE factory in Rugby to Nancy, France. (The issue is unrelated to Brexit!)
[Letter attached]
This Rugby facility has critical expertise in manufacture of quiet motors for the Type 26 frigate and future warships.

Gentlemen: I think the Type 26 has great potential, however, the risk is that individual navies will want to customise their version to the point there is little commonality beyond the basic hull and main machinery outfit. One of the benefits of common systems is to be found in worldwide logistic support and another is in crew training. Time will tell!

The Type 26 Frigate, or ‘City class’, represents one of the most capable warships the Royal Navy has owned in decades, albeit one of the most costly.

The City class will replace 8 of the 13 Type 23 frigates of the Royal Navy and export orders are being sought after by BAE. The programme has been underway since 1998, initially under the name ‘Future Surface Combatant’. The programme was brought forward in the 2008 budget at the expense of Type 45 destroyers 7 and 8.
