Terma to supply radar sets for second batch of Type 26 Frigates

Danish manufacturer Terma is set to supply another ten SCANTER 6000 radars to equip the last five Royal Navy Type 26 frigates.

The second batch of the Type 26 frigates consists of five ships – HMS Birmingham, HMS Sheffield, HMS Newcastle, HMS Edinburgh, and HMS London – and will be equipped with Terma SCANTER 6000 radars.

According to Terma:

“The SCANTER 6000 radar systems, to be supplied by Terma, are renowned for their exceptional performance in naval applications. These radars offer simultaneous detection capabilities for small targets, helicopter guidance, and large and small target detection at various ranges, including close and maximum distances.

The Royal Navy’s Type 26 frigates are designed to be versatile, advanced anti-submarine warfare warships and will serve as the replacement for eight of the retiring Type 23 fleet. Terma’s contribution solidifies Terma’s reputation as a key player in delivering cutting-edge defense technology and underscores the company’s commitment to enhancing naval operational effectiveness.

Terma’s track record in delivering advanced technology solutions for navies around the world, including the Danish, American, French, German, and Norwegian navies, underscores the trust placed in the SCANTER 6000 radar system. Its exceptional performance even in adverse weather conditions further enhances the operational capabilities and situational awareness of the Royal Navy’s Type 26 frigates.”

The agreement on the delivery of the radars has been contracted with German marine navigation manufacturer Anschütz, who is providing the complete Integrated Bridge System (IBS).

Adding firepower to the Type 26 Frigate

BAE Systems recently unveiled a proposal to add additional VLS cells to the Hunter class frigates being built for the Royal Australian Navy. Here we examine the background to the requirement for more missiles and the potential opportunities for Type 26 customer nations.

Up arming down under
The Australian Defence Strategic Review (DSR) concluded that the country needs to change from its reactive posture and adopt a more proactive strategy intended to defeat potential threats further away from its northern coast. In naval terms, this will require “an enhanced lethality surface combatant fleet, that complements a conventionally-armed, nuclear-powered submarine fleet, is now essential given our changed strategic circumstances.”

Royal Navy

Happy St Andrews Day.

HMS Glasgow RN is an advanced anti-submarine warfare vessel.
Though the City-class frigates are still in construction, when they launch they will become the new workhorses of our fleet.

Protestors block Glasgow shipyard gates

Protestors have blocked the gates to BAE Systems shipyard in Govan in an effort to “shut down sites which produce components for the F-35 fighter jet”.
The shipyard doesn’t produce parts for fighter jets, though.

New images show work on new Glasgow frigate

HMS Glasgow, the first of eight Type 26 Frigates being built in Scotland, is currently being fitted out on the River Clyde.
Also known as Type 26 frigates, the City Class will comprise of eight ships in total, with the first three (the HMS Glasgow, Cardiff and Belfast) expected to enter the fleet before 2030. A further five ships (HMS Birmingham, Sheffield, Newcastle, Edinburgh and London) will join after 2030.

The vessel is currently fitting out but will start sea trials ahead of her commissioning into the Royal Navy in the coming years. No drone footage due to the high winds, unfortunately.

Clyde shipyard frigate contractors set for strike action

Trade union Unite confirmed today that over 30 members contracted to work on the new Type 26 Frigates on the Clyde are set for strike action in the new year.
The Unite members involved in the pay dispute are employed by CBL Cable Contractors Limited based at the BAE Systems Govan and Scotstoun shipyards on the Clyde.

In short, the issue is that around 30 workers are paid £1 less per hour than others at the yard who are on the BAE Systems yard rate. The workers include electricians, labourers and cable hands.
