From battleship grey to green – newest ships embrace latest tech to help the environment

The newest warships in the Royal Navy’s inventory are the greenest since the days of sail.
And the green credentials of HMS Tamar and Spey are being incorporated – and built upon – in the Navy’s next breed of submarine hunters, currently under construction on the Clyde.

Patrol ships HMS Tamar and Spey are currently making their way across the Pacific to their new theatre of operations for the next five years: the Indo-Pacific region.

As well as bringing a permanent Royal Navy presence to a part of the world key to the UK’s interests for the first time since the handover of Hong Kong, they do so with minimum impact on the environment.

Their selective catalytic reduction system works to reduce emissions of nitrogen oxide – which attacks the ozone layer and is also a key component of acid rain – into the by up to 97 per cent.

By converting urea to ammonia on board, it is injected into catalysts in the exhaust system, where it breaks down harmful emissions and converts them into simple diatomic nitrogen and water.

GLASGOW

HMS Glasgow was due to be in the water in “late 2021/early 2022”.
(To be floated off barge at Glen Mallan before being towed back up river to Scotstoun for fitting out).
Timetable appears to have slipped slightly due to COVID and delays in supply chain.

Under-gunned Royal Navy warships?

It was announced in the House of Commons earlier this week that initially the Type 26 frigate will be armed with just a helicopter and a short-range missile system (plus a medium calibre gun and CIWS, although this wasn’t mentioned). In this article, Tom Sharpe provides a basic analysis of how RN weapons fit compares to similar warships in other navies.

The table below groups ships from various countries down the left. Across the top, it lists the nine major weapon systems that are operational today. Each ship gets a binary ‘yes/no’ against these systems and a total score on the right followed by the country average. For the RN, I looked at current and new-build escorts and how they score. Initial comparisons with US Navy (USN) escorts proved to be classically gloomy so to try and level things out a bit, I included French, Australian, Canadian and Dutch ships as well. Finally, I included the latest Chinese and Russian equivalents. Apologies to the Japanese, Norwegians and anyone else I left off.
