Britain deploying 20,000 troops across Europe to deter Russia

Defence Secretary Grant Shapps has announced that in the first half of 2024, 20,000 service personnel from the Royal Navy, the British Army, and the Royal Air Force will deploy across Europe to take part in Exercise Steadfast Defender 24.
The exercises will see the UK’s Armed Forces join thousands of personnel from 31 NATO allies and Sweden, operating across multiple countries, coinciding with the NATO Alliance’s 75th year.

The following is an excerpt of this speech given by Shapps.

Royal Navy: HMS Queen Elizabeth to leave Portsmouth for huge Nato mission in North Sea amid worldwide tensions

The Royal Navy's most powerful warship will be deployed soon on the largest Nato exercise in a decade.
HMS Queen Elizabeth is due to join allies and brave harsh weather conditions in the North Sea as part of the UK Carrier Strike Group (CSG). She is due to leave HMNB Portsmouth this Sunday (February 4) and lead Exercise Steadfast Defender.
The mission follows on from Operation Firedrake, where intense ship movement and aircraft exercises were carried out alongside allies from a variety of nations.

HMS Queen Elizabeth prepares to sail for NATO exercise in European waters

While uncertainty surrounds whether she may eventually be deployed to the Middle East, it’s business as usual for now as HMS Queen Elizabeth will sail on Sunday 4th February to join the largest NATO exercise for decades.

The flagship will lead the UK Carrier Strike Group on Exercise Steadfast Defender (STDE24) building on the training and development work conducted during Operation Firedrake / UKCSG23 which took place last Autumn. More widely it is a demonstration of the UK’s commitment to NATO and the defence of Europe. Around 90,000 personnel from all 31 NATO allies (plus Sweden) will participate and the maritime element will include over 50 warships.

Routine pre-sailing checks yesterday identified an issue with a coupling on HMSQNLZ starboard propeller shaft.
As such, the ship will not sail on Sunday.

HMSQNLZ has a shaft coupling defect…
Some thoughts off the bat:
This is why two carriers were built were built.
HMSPWLS now has a job on to get ready, pick up what’s left of NATO exercise Steadfast Defender and then on, but that is what will happen.

In a sudden change of plans, HMS Queen Elizabeth will not participate in the upcoming NATO exercise Steadfast Defender, due to a mechanical issue identified in the starboard propeller shaft.

The Royal Navy has promptly readied HMS Prince of Wales to fill in for her sister.
