While uncertainty surrounds whether she may eventually be deployed to the Middle East, it’s business as usual for now as HMS Queen Elizabeth will sail on Sunday 4th February to join the largest NATO exercise for decades.
The flagship will lead the UK Carrier Strike Group on Exercise Steadfast Defender (STDE24) building on the training and development work conducted during Operation Firedrake / UKCSG23 which took place last Autumn. More widely it is a demonstration of the UK’s commitment to NATO and the defence of Europe. Around 90,000 personnel from all 31 NATO allies (plus Sweden) will participate and the maritime element will include over 50 warships.

Routine pre-sailing checks yesterday identified an issue with a coupling on HMSQNLZ starboard propeller shaft.
As such, the ship will not sail on Sunday.
HMSPWLS will take her place on NATO duties and will set sail for Exercise Steadfast Defender as soon as possible.

HMSQNLZ has a shaft coupling defect…
Some thoughts off the bat:
This is why two carriers were built were built.
HMSPWLS now has a job on to get ready, pick up what’s left of NATO exercise Steadfast Defender and then on, but that is what will happen.
