Estonian Navy and ADM Cowan

Unread post by greendragon »

Te subject was chasing me for many years.
HMN in the Baltic fighting the bloody Bolshevicks together with help of Estonians and Latvians.
As for Estonia a name of warrior emerged - ADM Cowan.
He commanded the British fleet in the Baltic in very energetic way and did not miss an opportunity to fight using very "flexible" interpretation of his mandate.
His biography is in internet and it is an amazing one.
Should be added that in age 73(!) during WW2 he volunteered to take active part in the British Commando action, and described by his colleagues "as the only one among the HM officers who was saddened with the end of WW1".
Named the commander of HM fleet in the Baltic he showed maximum aggressiveness and actually kept Bolshevick fleet bottled in their bases there.
The Estonia emerged as independent country in 1920 but in1939 lost it to Soviets and worse was annexed to their state as one of the "socialist republics".
ADM Cowan as well as the whole Royal Navy is highly respected by the Estonians.
A plaque with the names of the commanding HM admirals who were leading men and ships to combat Bolshevicks is on the Estonian Gvt building and in a church another plaque listing all the British servicemen who lost life in the war of this country independence is also present.
Very unusual gesture has been that a British minehunter vessel ex HMS Sandown was sold to Estonia to became EML Cowan, to commemorize the British Admiral.
