AUKUS Project

Unread post by Pelican »

AUSTRALIAN navy crew are due to start training alongside Barrow's shipyard workers by the end of this year as part of a major submarine-building project.

The UK and Australia will both build new submarines as part of the AUKUS defence agreement between the two countries and the USA, with construction of the UK’s submarines taking place in Barrow.

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and UK Defence Secretary Ben Wallace visited the shipyard today where the next generation of AUKUS nuclear submarines will be built for the Royal Navy.

Understanding the timeframe for the AUKUS submarine programme

Since the formal announcement in March that Australia would partner with the RN to design and build a new class of SSNs, further details have emerged about how the AUKUS submarine programme will be structured.

Providing Australia with nuclear submarines will be a multi-decade tri-national endeavour and will inevitably be influenced by, as yet unforseen economic, political and geostrategic changes that may occur over its lifetime. The joint steering group from the 3 nations has for now at least, produced a credible initial plan, adopting the crawl-walk-run approach to building up Australian capability almost from scratch.

AUKUS Sub Sale Will Cause 10-Year Dip in U.S. Attack Boat Inventory, Says CBO

The U.S. nuclear attack submarine inventory will experience a nearly decade-long dip due to the AUKUS partnership, according to a new Congressional Budget Office analysis of U.S. naval shipbuilding.

To support selling three to five Virginia-class attack boats to the Royal Australian Navy, the attack boat inventory will decrease in the mid-2030s, as shipyards won’t be able to deliver Virginia-class boats to absorb the loss of the sale to Australia.

The dip, estimated to start in 2037, will keep U.S. attack boat inventory in the high 40s to low 50s for about a decade, meaning the Navy will remain short of its goal of 66 attack submarines in the fleet.
